Last Monday, FURIA revealed that it will have to cut staff across several departments. The decision came after Valve, the developer behind Counter-Strike 2, modified the Major sticker system, removing the revenue source that supported a large portion of the team's cash flow.

breakdown of the sticker revenue model

In previous Majors, sticker sales were split 50% to Valve and 50% to the teams, with the latter portion divided among the 32 qualified teams based on regional standings and tournament progress. When Valve replaced random capsules with a token shop, the split changed: organizers began receiving a flat 5%, while the remaining 45% was distributed differently, without considering sticker sales linked to the team's name.

An example illustrated in the report was the case of a team that had earned around 600,000 USD from stickers at the Budapest Major, but only received 120,000 USD at the Cologne Major, a nearly 90% drop.

direct impact on FURIA

CEO and co-founder André Akkari stated that, although FURIA has around twelve active sponsors, the drop in revenue affected “everything” in the organization. He described the situation as “very damaging” for the team and the esports market in general, as many organizations relied almost exclusively on stickers to maintain their cash flow.

The company has already reduced staff in the design, production, and social media departments, and Akkari indicated that the restructuring process is still ongoing.

consequences for the competitive scene

The financial shock is also appearing in other teams in the scene. The MongolZ, for example, announced that Anarbileg “cobrazera” Uuganbayar will take over Sodbayar “Techno” Munkhbold's position at FISSURE Playground 3, signaling roster changes that may be the result of internal adjustments. The event, taking place in Suzhou, will feature 16 participants, including FURIA.

future outlook for FURIA

Akkari stated that FURIA will continue to “restructure, change, and make significant changes” to cope with the new financial reality. The organization believes its broader sponsorship base offers some protection, but recognizes that teams without this support face even greater challenges.

what to expect from the esports market

The collapse of sticker revenues exposes a deeper risk in the CS2 economy: many teams built their financial plans around a single income stream, with no safety net. FURIA, despite having a robust sponsorship portfolio, shows that relying on a single model can be dangerous.
